EAR SURGERY (OTOPLASTY)

Ear surgery, is generally recommend by Dr. Olmedo for those kids who are near the complete development of their ears around the ages of 5 or 6. The improvement of their ears before entering school helps eliminate any psychological problems caused by bullying. Adults can have prominent ears as well. There is no age limit for this surgery if you count with good health.

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR EAR SURGERY?

Those patients who are benefited with ear surgery are those who:

  • Have prominent ears (plastic surgery more frequently done in ears)
  • Have big ears
  • Abnormalities on the shape of their ear
  • Abnormalities on the auricular lobe

Normally the results of ear surgery are long lasting. During your appointment with Dr. Olmedo, he might request for you to see yourself on a mirror and point exactly what you will actually want to see improved. This will help him understand your expectations and determine if it is possible to do want you want.

HOW IS THE SURGERY DONE?

There are many ways to improve your ears appearance. Dr. Juan Carlos Olmedo would recommend the technique that best works for you depending on your problem as well as the ones that will help give you your desired results.

If your problem is protuberant ears, the supporting tissue of you ear known as cartilage, is reshaped and position closer to your head. This is done by making incisions behind your ears; the scars are hidden on the folds of your skin. Reducing the size of your ears is done by removing cartilage and allowing the wounds are located on the back portion allowing a discrete healing. In case of ear reduction, skin and cartilage will be eliminated.

Medication is administered offering a comfortable time during the surgical procedure. Local anesthesia and intravenous sedation are generally used, however general anesthesia may be used in some cases (especially in kids). Once the surgery is done, you will be taken to the recovery area where you will be followed up closely. The person responsible of you will be told to make sure the bandages are not too tight. You might feel a little bit uncomfortable, especially having a bandage over your head. You will be able to go home after a short period of observation, although some patients do stay over night. The pain is normally controlled through oral medication. Stitches will be removed a week after the surgery. After the surgery a subjection band will cover your ears over night to help your ears to not fold during your sleep. Most people are able to go back to work after 7 to 10 days.
